Neto, who won a gold medal at this year’s Strandja Memorial Boxing Championships in Sofia, dominated the action from the start. The Bhiwani boxer showed tireless energy and his superb footwork and precise punching speed.

Neto escalated the contest in the next two rounds and continued his attacking style without giving his opponent a chance and won the match by convincing 5-0.

His next opponent in the quarterfinals on Monday will be Kazakhstan’s Alva Balki Bekova.

Later on Saturday night, Manisha (57kg) will face Svetlana Steniva of Bulgaria.

On Sunday, six Indian boxers, including Nakhat Zarine, will be in action in the Round of 16 bouts.

Nikhat (52kg) and Shiksha (54kg) will next face Mongolia’s Lutsaikhan Altantsetseg and Youth Asian Bronze medalist Yesugen Oyuntsetseg respectively, while Parveen will face former Youth Olympic champion USA Jajaira Gonzalez.

Anamika (50kg) will face World Championship bronze medalist Christie Lee Harris of Australia, while Jasmine (60kg) will face Angela Harry of Australia.

Meanwhile, 2017 Youth World Champion Ankushita (66kg) will make her Elite World Championship debut against Poland’s Anita Regilska.

This year’s event, marking the 20th anniversary of the IBA Women’s World Championships, will run until May 20.

In the last edition of the tournament held in Russia in 2019, Indian boxers won one silver and three bronze medals.

The Indian boxers have won 36 medals in the last 11 editions of the tournament, including nine gold, eight silver and 19 bronze, ranking third behind Russia (60) and China (50). In the last edition held in Russia in 2019, Indians had won one silver and three bronze medals.
