An awakened fourth-grade teacher at William Penn Elementary School in Utah, who took paid leave after bragging that she built her classroom for “non-white students,” will keep her job. The teacher released an apology for her video, in which she proudly states, “If you look around and interact with some of the materials I own, you will notice that white children are not represented.”

“For the first time in my life, I’m going to be teaching in a predominantly white school, and I’m kind of interested in seeing how students and parents interact with my class – because it’s designed for non-white students,” the teacher said in a video posted on social media.

The teacher, whose identity has not been revealed, said she made sure that white children were not “represented” in class materials.

“If you look around and interact with some of the stuff I have, you’ll notice that there are no, say, white children represented,” she said. “As with my coloring pages, I have a large selection of coloring pages for students to use, and not a single page has a single person depicting a white person.”

“And the only Disney princesses I have are Mulan and Moana,” the teacher went on, adding that once she saw that her classroom library was “dominated by straight white men, cis, and white men,” she “overcame them” by “buying books” that depicted many people Diverse people, whether they are people of color or non-binary, transgender, LGBTQ people.”

“So there is not a lot of commitment to the status quo at this basic level in my class,” the teacher said. “I feel that some parents might have something to say about it, if my experience with lavish white parents in the past is correct for this year.”

As a result of her comments, the teacher was suspended while the Granite School District was investigating.

After a month-long investigation, school district officials said they had no evidence to confirm “any policy or legal violations” regarding the comment made in the teacher’s social media post, according to a report by ABC4.

However, the school district indicated that it reprimanded the teacher for her behavior.

“We have adjusted the employee as appropriate and consistent with the findings of the investigation,” said Granite School District representatives.

The principal of William Penn Elementary School reportedly described the teacher’s comments as “extremely disturbing,” adding, “It is inappropriate for any staff member to make students feel unwelcome in any way, shape, or form.”

“I am deeply sorry for the disruption to the school, faculty, community, families, and above all my students,” the teacher said in a statement.

The expectations in my class are to be safe, responsible and respectful. I have built my class for all learners and to be welcoming to all families. I have been going to continue to ensure that every student feels welcome and represented in my classroom, and I will strive to provide an inclusive environment and to ensure the safety and comfort of all my students. I would also like to reiterate the importance of parental involvement and welcome their participation in the education of their children. I am committed to adhering to state and district approved standards, curricula, and materials to ensure the success of my students.
