NEW YORK —
Former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu apologized to her sponsor Nike for her outrage on the court after her outfit choices for Monday’s first-round match left her in an unsettling place in windy conditions.
Andreescu came out on the Grandstand court to play Harmony Tan but the wind in the open arena continued to blow her skirt and affect her stroke, forcing the 22-year-old to approach the chair referee and request an extra break in the bathroom to change.
“Doesn’t this count as one of my substitutions? I mean it’s not my fault, it’s Nike’s fault,” he told the referee.
“This dress is so, so bad… I have to go (change), it’s so bad.”
Andreescu again donned a tank top and white Nike skirt to finally beat Tan 6-0 3-6 6-1.
“It only bothered me a few forehands. I just feel like it’s going to pop up a bit. Obviously the wind didn’t help,” he told reporters.
“But I don’t mean to be disrespectful to what I said to the referee. I tried to convince him not to take that restroom break, because I knew we only got two. He was very kind to say it was absolutely fine.
“I definitely could have used a different choice of words. So I apologize to anyone I didn’t respect. I love Nike and I hope I can be with them for the rest of my life!”
Andreescu will next face Beatriz Haddad Maia in the second round.
