Himanta Vishwa Sarma government in Assam has initiated necessary steps to end child marriage. During this, at least 17 fake Qazis have been arrested in Hailakandi district of the state. This Qazi used to conduct marriages with children. They have been caught from various places in the district.

The arrested Qazis were identified as Ajiruddin Lashkar, Farizuddin Lashkar, Asadullah Lashkar, Abdul Jalal Lashkar, Nurul Haq Lashkar, Aftabuddin Lashkar, Abdul Salam Barbhuiya, Abu Bakar Barbhuiya, Sharifuddin Barbhuiya, Qaiser Ahmed, Mufti Abuldar, Hussa Mufti Abuldar, Hussa Mufti Abulam, Hussa Mufti Abdul. , Ubaidullah Chaudhary and Sayedul Haq.

An official said that these Qazis do not have the necessary certificate to conduct marriages. Along with this, they have been found involved in child marriage in the district. Actually, Qazi does the work of conducting marriages in Islam. These Qazis are interrogated. The police have seized ten “confessions” from their possession.

The policeman says that one of the arrested accused has conducted 150-200 marriages illegally in the district. Some of these also include child marriage. Hailakandi ASP Sameer Barua said the police have seized several Nikah records from the accused. In addition to this, many documents have also been seized.

Let us tell you that earlier this month, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that polygamy will be abolished in the state by December 2023. Along with this, it was said that child marriage will be completely abolished by 2026. He said that action will be taken again against child marriage from 1 September.

The Assam government may introduce a bill in the state assembly in December to ban polygamy. Chief Minister Sarma has announced that it will be completed within the next 45 days. For this he has also formed a committee. That committee has also submitted its report.

Speaking to the media in Silchar, CM Sarma said, “The draft is being prepared and by December, polygamy will end in Assam. After September 15, the state will see another round of arrests for child marriage.” The CM said action will be taken against child marriage in the state every six months.

Prior to this, in February 2023, the Assam government had taken major action against those who carry out child marriage. In this regard, more than 4 thousand cases have been registered in the state so far. More than 2,200 people were arrested. This action was questioned by AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi and AIUDF chief Maulana Badruddin Ajmal.

During that time, CM Sarma had said that so far 4074 cases related to child marriage have been registered across the state. A total of 8,134 defendants have been identified. He said that the drive against child marriage will continue and we will have to arrest about 3500 people.
