Usher honored his late drummer Aaron Spears by leaving an empty gold drum on stage during the Super Bowl VIII Halftime Show.
The R’n’B superstar wowed with his star-studded performance at halftime of the Kansas City Chiefs’ 25-22 victory over the San Francisco 49ers at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Sunday (11.02.24).
If you look closely at his band, as well as drummer Devon ‘Stixx’ Taylor’s kit, there was one unused drum in memory of Aaron, who died in October 2023 at the age of 47. Likes Ariana Grande, Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber.
He received a Grammy nomination for Usher’s album Confessions in 2004.
Usher hailed Aaron as his “hero” during his eulogy at his Celebration of Life event.
Jessica, the Grammy-nominated musician’s widow and mother to son August, shared the sad news of his death in October.
In a moving tribute, he wrote: “Aaron was not only an amazing drummer who was admired by many for his unparalleled talent and passion for music, but he was also a devoted father to our precious son, Augustus.”
He continued: ‘His love, guidance and warmth were the pillars of our family and his absence leaves a void that cannot be described in words.
“We are blessed to have him in our lives, his legacy lives on through the beautiful rhythms he created and the love he shared with us.
“We appreciate all the thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Please remember Aaron for the incredible person he was and the wonderful music he brought to our world. In the meantime, we ask for our privacy while working on this road. With love, Jessica and August.”
Meanwhile, Usher was joined on stage at the Super Bowl by Alicia Keys, Lil Jon, Ludacris, HER and will.i.am.
