Stacey Roy started building Legos with her dad when she was a little girl, but it’s her grown-up brick-building skills that are gaining a worldwide following on Wednesday night.

The Kelowna woman is among 24 contestants who get to show off their construction chops in the season premiere. Lego Masters.

“I’ve been building Lego since I was a kid. My dad and I used to build these really huge Lego towers and then we’d knock them down… and then I went back to it as an adult,” he said.

He recently started doing live streaming with Lego, and in recent days his building partner, Nick Della Mora of Ontario, asked him if he would consider going to an audition with him. Lego MastersIt turned out to be the first year Canadians were allowed to compete.

“I said, ‘That sounds amazing,'” she said.

“Then before I knew it, the ball was rolling. I was auditioning and then I went to Atlanta, Georgia to attend Lego Masters.”

It’s been a brick-and-mortar vortex ever since.

“Being is the realization of such a dream Lego Masters and when you get there and you can see this set and the brick pit with over five million Lego pieces, it’s a lot to take in,” he said.

The first episode airing on Wednesday night is NASA themed. Contestants are tasked with building a fun, colorful, personalized spaceship that tells the judges something about their team.

“When it comes to construction, both my partner and I bring very different strengths to the table,” Roy said.

“He’s an incredible builder, he’s got mad skills. But for me it’s all about the story. So when I build something with Lego, I want to feel it come alive and tell a story. So it doesn’t matter what the challenge is, I really tried to bring it to the table.”

Roy couldn’t say much about what viewers will see, but the episode also features appearances by two NASA astronauts, Jessica Meir and Tom Marshburn, who inspire the contestants and share their experiences throughout the challenge.

Meir is personally involved in the shooting Lego Masters and Marshburn addresses contestants via a special downlink from the International Space Station.

The winning construction will be displayed at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida.

Hollywood star Chris Pratt is making an appearance on the show, and Roy said he was a little star-struck. Also, the show has a host and producer to keep things interesting.

“Will Arnett is exactly what you’d expect,” he said.

“He’s a very funny guy. He’s absolutely hilarious to be around and sometimes you need that because you really pay attention to what you’re building. Then it’s nice to have someone come and joke with you.”

He said it helps remind all competitors that building Legos is really fun, whether or not they win $100,000 on the table.

Lego Masters Season 3 premieres Wednesday, September 21st at 9pm on FOX. New episodes are released every Wednesday.

The competition is judged by Lego staff and expert brickmakers Jamie Berard and Amy Corbett.
