The daughter of the late Desmond Tutu has reportedly been banned by the Church of England from leading her godfather’s funeral because he is married to a woman.
pho Tutu van Furth, a practicing Anglican priest in America, was asked to conduct the funeral in Shropshire on Thursday.
In a statement carried by the BBC, the Diocese of Hereford said: “The advice was given in line with the House of Bishops’ current guidance on same-sex marriage.”
Ms Toto van Furth reportedly told the broadcaster that the decision “seemed really haphazard and hurtful”.
The Church of England does not allow same-sex marriage among its clergy, but the Episcopal Church in America – of which Miss Tutu Van Furth is a part – does.
When he revealed his sexuality, his license was revoked in South Africa.
