Hundreds of hospital beds are being filled by flu patients, tenfold more than last year, prompting fears that the NHS is facing a ‘triple situation’ this winter.
NHS data shows that an average of 344 hospital beds in England each day were taken up by flu patients last week.
This is more than 10 times the number seen in the first week of December last year.
Stephen Boyce, medical director for the NHS England, warned that the NHS faced a “triple situation” of influenza, Covid and the demand for emergency care during the winter months.
According to the data, ambulances have lost more than 20,000 hours waiting outside A&Es to offload patients.
