Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed to every Indian to hoist the national flag at their homes from August 13 to 15. He has named this campaign ‘Har Ghar Taranga’. This will be another master stroke by Modi. Therefore, the opposition parties will be further on the back foot. They can neither oppose it nor fully support it. To oppose is to risk being called a traitor, while to support is to agree with Modi’s decision. Today, opposition parties are struggling to find an issue through which they can connect with a common sentiment. In such a situation, he would neither like to be a traitor nor stand in support of Modi. Modi has made several appeals in the past, such as chanting Bharat Mata Ki Jai or respecting the national anthem in public. BJP has become adept at using nationalism very cleverly to appeal to public sentiments.
Such appeals will not promote the economy of the country and neither will the educated youth get employment, but the national spirit will definitely be strengthened among the people. In fact today BJP has monopolized the nationalist sentiments. Since 2014, the BJP has been expanding its base in the country. During this time he not only won two Lok Sabha elections with a majority but also won power in several states. In 2009, the BJP’s national vote share was 18.6 percent, which nearly doubled to 37.4 percent in 2019. In recent days, the slogan of Bharat Mata Ki Jai has also come up. People were scolded and even beaten up for refusing to say Jai to Bharat Mata. Maharashtra MLA Waris Pathan was unanimously suspended from the assembly for not chanting Bharat Mata Ki Jai. Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had said in this regard that this announcement is being misused to create a military India.
A study conducted by Lok Niti-CSDS in collaboration with Azim Premji University has found that the Bharat Mata ki Jai appeal is well supported by Indians. About 50 percent of people polled said anyone who refused to make the announcement should be punished. Only 28 percent disagreed. The survey found similar support for the national anthem, with about 59 percent saying those who do not stand during the national anthem should be punished. Such is the ideological supremacy of the BJP that no opposition party dared to oppose the abrogation of Article 370 and the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. On the contrary, most of the parties supported it. Due to these developments, there has been a revolutionary change in Indian politics. Today, there is no one left to challenge the BJP at the centre. Of course, some regional parties are still in power in the states, but they too are finding it difficult to challenge the nationalist agenda.
Since 2014, the BJP has significantly strengthened its position in the Hindi belt. While retaining the urban electorate, the BJP has now gained considerable support from the rural electorate as well. You can also see it as a patriotic endorsement of nationalist politics. Every home tricolor will help the BJP further expand its reach. (These are the personal views of the author.)
