Introduction: The able writer, writer and critic, Professor “Nabil Odeh,” a resident of the city of Nazareth, writes the short story, novel, critical studies and various articles on various topics: political, social, literary and cultural. For more than 45 years, he has published many literary books, stories and novels and published his creative production in Most of the media are locally and abroad, and he is considered one of the pioneers of the short story and the novel at the local level. In this article, I will discuss his novel “The Impossible” through review and analysis
Entrance: The novel “The Impossible” is located in (148 pages) of medium size, and the writer Nabil dedicates his novel back to “Fawzi Dabit,” the son of the city of Ramle, an uncle, father, friend and a great person… He left us and remained in us with his great love for all people… As stated in the dedication. On the next page of the book (the novel) the writer puts examples of what Albert Camus said about slavery: ((Slavery? No, of course. We are against it!! This is the limit! We do not hesitate to announce two or three statements, or perhaps more!!).
This novel is characterized by its graceful style, its beautiful, elegant and interesting language, and in it the element of surprise is manifested and radiated (in many dramatic scenes)… the important element that gives every novel, whatever its subject and orientation, a dimension and artistic beauty. The novel talks about several important topics and issues: human, social, family, political, national, philosophical, literary and cultural…etc. We touch, discover and live these topics through the course of the novel’s events and its sequence, and in its paintings, its wonderful dramatic scenes.
The novel begins on the writer’s tongue, in the style and narrative character, as a beginning and an introduction, when he is inside a shop to buy some things, and a woman steps in and puts in his hand a paper that says (I am waiting for a call from you at six o’clock in the evening) and under it the signature of (The Desperate R.). The writer (the narrator or the hero of the story) is confused about this woman and her truth, and at first he thought that she likes and loves him and wants to establish a relationship with him. The writer tries many times to contact her in vain, and the novel extends for several chapters, and the matter of this woman remains a mystery, and the reader thinks that she is a woman who wants to establish a relationship with him no more.. But after a long distance and stage in the course of the story, the truth of this woman appears, as she was a colleague and lover of the writer’s friend and his name Useful since high school, her name is Layla. And his friend Mufid was a poet and writer who wrote inflammatory political poems and had to travel abroad to study medicine and was unable to marry his beloved Laila. As for Laila, she succumbed to the pressures of her parents, as they married her to a person she did not love, who was sterile and did not give birth and treated her badly, and she lived in hell with him. After Mufid returned from abroad and finished his studies, he married another girl, a traditional marriage that was not based on love and complete harmony (spiritual, intellectual and emotional), as was his relationship with his beloved Laila. According to the writer’s opinion, and in his sardonic style – as stated in the novel – that Mufid married this girl because her legs are nice.. that is, out of whim and physical lust for the moment (and this happens with many men and young men in our Arab society, where they are attracted to a girl and a woman out of lust or a part of it. her body, such as her legs, waist, breasts, buttocks, etc.), Mufid marries and has several children from his wife, but his life is dry with his wife because she is without love, feelings and inflamed emotions. After several years, Laila meets Mofeed through a useful job where he works in the HMO’s clinic and is the family doctor – Laila’s family – and because she was oppressed and persecuted by her husband and family (spiritually, psychologically and physically) and living in repression and deprivation where her husband was sterile, so the relationship with her lover is renewed and glowing. The full contact between them occurs spiritually, emotionally, and physically, and she gets carried away by him and gets into a big problem because of customs and traditions.. and she does not know how to act to get out of this predicament and difficult predicament, and that is why the writer puts the paper in the hands of the writer, an old and intimate friend, when he was in the shop with her phone number and asks him to call It is used in order to consult him and ask for his help on this subject. The novel then extends to several chapters, and in each chapter and a panel the writer opens in a narrative style on the lips of a certain character.. Either Mufid or Laila or the writer who wrote the novel, and then the dramatic dialogue (a dialogue between the heroes of the novel). Through the dramatic narration and dialogue, the writer touches on many ancient dramatic topics and scenes that go back to earlier and later periods when Mofid was a high school student and before he traveled abroad for study. For example, the writer reviews Mufid’s dynamic life and political activity with his colleagues, peers and classmates. He mentions that Mufid was a distinguished patriotic poet who wrote many fiery political poems and how they held sit-ins and participated in demonstrations, popular marches, political and cultural activities for humanitarian and national issues and to obtain rights, the rights of the oppressed Arab minority Inside the country that suffers from the policy of racial discrimination (the Arabs of the 48th) .. He was useful, as the writer describes it, not panting and running after fame and spread. He also talks about Laila about how she was a beautiful, educated, respectful girl with a strong personality and many young men would like to get close to her and gain her approval, but she did not pay attention to anyone and only cared about Mufeed, whom she loved and loved, and the deep and warm love relationship between them was supposed to culminate in legal marriage. But this did not happen for a useful trip abroad to study medicine… and Laila marries another person
At the end of the story, after years of estrangement, the relationship between Mofeed and Laila returns and they (Mofeed and Laila) travel abroad to Canada and get married there… The surprise will be for everyone and the story ends with this open ending… This is a brief, quick and cursory review of the novel.
Analysis: In this novel there are all the important elements and foundations for building an advanced and integrated creative novel. First, in terms of the length of the novel, its distance, and its dramatic scenes, which are full of surprises and important, complex and sequential themes and issues. All this appears in the course and sequence of events in the novel, in exciting dramatic situations and intertwined and complex topics. The novel is characterized by a beautiful and elegant literary language. And sometimes we discern and feel the color and the journalistic and reporting character in some situations and scenes, especially as stated by the writer through his analysis and philosophy of some life matters from his progressive and revolutionary perspective.
In the novel, the writer talks about an important and sensitive historical period and stage, the sixties of the last century, when he was a high school student (the time of military rule and shortly afterwards) and when he was a member and comrade of the Communist Party, which was the only party at the time that defended the issues of the Arab minority (Arabs). The 84th (inside the State of Israel) and the writer was a social and political activist and participated in many activities, rallies and demonstrations with his colleagues for the issues of his people… the Arab minority at home, and he talks about the character of “Mofeed” and it may be a real character, but it is symbolized by this pseudonym and this character is there Many like her in our society, and that he was a capable, creative poet and writer who devoted his writing to politics and important national issues.
The writer was able to formulate his novel and weave it in a beautiful and elegant way that attracts the reader and draws him to read it to the end without interruption. One of the important topics that the writer addresses and addresses in this novel is the issue of women’s oppression and persecution in Arab society and the failure to give them their basic and important rights to life, especially in issues of marriage and choosing a partner and husband, where, decades ago, the parents were the ones who drew and decided the fate and future of the girl and they were forcing the girl to marry from A person she does not want and does not love, and they prevent her from choosing a life partner on her own, so her marital life through backward traditional marriage will be an unbearable hell. Arabi. The writer also talks about the illegitimate relations that occur between lovers and lovers outside marriage, where the oppressed and oppressed woman from her husband who was forced and forced to marry him under pressure from the family and she does not love and abhor him, automatically and in reflection and protest against her forceful circumstances establish an intimate and complete relationship with her lover and lover The one who was prevented from marrying him in order to vent the repression and deprivation that she has suffered for many years and to take revenge on the injustice of society and the family… However, the writer, in turn, rejects these relationships and criticizes them because they harm and affect the social and family fabric. Betrayal of her unjust and tyrannical husband extensively… This issue and this topic exists and is widely spread in our Arab society, unfortunately, and today because many complete relationships, physically and emotionally, occur outside marriage. The writer believes that a true and natural marriage is a marriage based on love, mutual respect between the two parties, and complete harmony, and not from a purely immediate physical relationship.
The writer says in one of the chapters of the novel entitled: (“The Red Sun Disc” p.115):
(“A thousand suns glowed and faded. The strangeness of their atmosphere took me. I explored horizons and dimensions. I searched for a point of light in what was happening, a glimmer of hope guiding my steps. I tried to interpret things and their philosophy. All my arguments and documents failed to find a solution that fits, not with logic… but with the formations that Our control and the common one I have no doubt that Layla made a mistake and there is no doubt that Mofeed made the same mistake Emotion rose above logic I sank in deep confusion and realized that we were facing a dead end until one day I was talking to Mofeed, confused about what we are in. Without any previous An idea flashed in my brain, my face changed, and my face became very alert (referring to the predicament that Moufid got involved with Laila, where they had a sexual relationship and she got pregnant from him while she was with a sterile husband who does not have children) and the writer continues his talk and says:
(“All that remained before us was the method of deception. It was a crazy thought that was riding in my head, he did not understand me. His gaze attached to mine with bewildered inquiry, I said:
You are the family doctor, and you have a job relationship with them.
– That’s the basis of affliction
This is the basis of salvation.
He didn’t understand what was in my head) etc.
What is meant here is that the writer advised Mufid to be a family doctor in the HMO, where Laila and her husband are always treated with him, and he is the supervisor of every medical problem they face, to ask Laila’s husband, as his doctor, to go to a specialist in the field of treating those who have problems of infertility, infertility and childbearing, and delude him after a while Short that the treatment succeeded with him and he was able to have children and thus the issue and the problem is solved and he thinks that Laila’s pregnancy was from him and that is a normal thing after continuous treatment and not from another (useful) person.
But at the end of the story, the two protagonists, Laila and Dr. Mofeed, travel abroad and get married, and the novel ends in this way, with a semi-open ending.
The writer says page (147-last page of the novel):
(“I kept my silence and my eyes did not leave the TV screen, following the pranks of the clever mouse in the face of the predatory cat… trying to understand the relationship and similarity between what I see on the small screen, and what is really happening on the big screen of life.
Who is the mouse?… Who is the cat?
And are they, Mofeed and Laila… the smart mouse?!
– Professor… we speak from Canada…
Hello.. I am useful.. useful and Laila.. Hello…?!
I hung up, without saying a word, angry, refusing to be a cover for what was going on, and at the same time bewildered to find an alternative to what was going on.
I relaxed a little, sank into my seat (a beautiful and innovative linguistic expression), and again enjoyed, with the little ones… the cleverness of the mouse in deceiving the cat, with his infernal plans… (last page of the novel).
In the end, I want to say: the novel contains and includes in its surroundings and chapters several important aspects and dimensions, which are:
1 – The human dimension
2 – The social and family dimension.
3- The reality of women in Arab society tens of years ago and their oppression by the backward male society at the time.
4 – The political dimension
5- The national dimension
6 – The philosophical dimension, which includes an extensive analysis of many issues and matters in life and existence as a whole. The writer is a highly educated person who is well versed in various topics: literary, scientific, intellectual and philosophical…etc. And a wonderful literary and political analyst, deep, comprehensive and broad in his analyzes, theses and his vision of the universe, life, behaviors, social, human, philosophical dimensions and others.
6- The element of suspense and entertainment.
7- The sarcastic character that is characterized by the writer in a beautiful and wonderful way attracts the reader and adds aesthetics, attractiveness and suspense to follow the events of the novel.
8 – The element of surprise is present in many dramatic scenes in the chapters of this novel.
9 – The technical dimension.. This aspect is present in all the writings of the able writer, writer and critic, Mr. Nabil Odeh.
And last but not least: This novel is successful, integrated and harmonious in its texture and formulation in all respects and dimensions, in terms of style and elegant and ornate literary language, and in worlds and broad horizons and relevant, important, deep, complex and sequential topics, and through philosophical analysis of the various topics and issues that we live and through the human vision comprehensive, and for its smooth, beautiful, flowing, captivating language, full of new and innovative expressions and rhetorical terms. In this novel, we discover poetic language and dreamy romance, in some chapters and scenes from them.
And I can say: This novel is one of the most beautiful and wonderful novels at the local level in all respects, and it has the right to be translated into most foreign languages, and long studies and researches are written about it… And this article that I wrote is nothing but a humble and quick attempt and a brief review of some of the issues and topics that the novel deals with and deals with. (The Impossible) where I highlight only certain points and not an extensive and comprehensive study. And I hope, in turn, that I have been given this novel, if only a small part of what it deserves.
