Is the Chairman NAB being extended through presidential reference?

The government has decided to give a temporary extension to Javed Iqbal till the appointment of a new chairman NAB. The Prime Minister said that the Leader of the Opposition could not be consulted for the new Chairman NAB. Babar Awan has confirmed that there is an option of Presidential Ordinance, however, the final decision will be taken in a day or two.

An important meeting was held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Imran Khan in which the legal aspects of the decision to temporarily extend Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal till the appointment of new Chairman NAB were reviewed.

Prime Minister Imran Khan was briefed on legal issues to extend the tenure of Chairman NAB and the current Chairman Javed Iqbal was advised to extend it temporarily.

Constitutionally, the appointment of NAB chairman requires consultation between the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly.

Prime Minister Imran Khan directed Federal Law Minister Barrister Forough Naseem to bring a presidential ordinance. Under which a temporary extension will be given to the Chairman NAB soon through a Presidential Ordinance.

Speaking on SAMAA’s Nadeem Malik Live, Babar Awan, Advisor to the Prime Minister on Parliamentary Affairs, said that the current Chairman NAB Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal was appointed in consultation with former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and former Leader of the Opposition Khurshid Shah. No one should object to their expansion.

Confirming the option of the Presidential Ordinance, the Adviser to the Prime Minister said that a final decision on extending the tenure of the Chairman NAB would be taken in a day or two, for which there is also an option of the Presidential Ordinance.
