Johnson: Britain decides to boycott the Beijing Olympics “diplomatically”
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced today, Wednesday, that his country will boycott the upcoming Beijing Olympics diplomats early next year by refraining from sending any ministers to attend the events.
Asked in Parliament in response to a question in this regard, Johnson said that he usually did not support “sport boycotts”, but revealed that there were no plans to send any ministers to attend the games due to alleged human rights violations by China.
“There will effectively be a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics, and none of the government ministers will attend,” he added.
The UK’s move follows similar steps by other Western countries, as Australia also announced today that it will join the United States in a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics.
