Some households were able to get huge discounts on their bills

Speaking on his ITV show Tonight, Lewis said more than 400,000 people are in the wrong tax brackets.

To find out which bracket you should be in, search for your zip code using the government’s online band checker.

If you’re in a higher bracket than your neighbors, your next step should be to check how much your house was worth in 1991.

It may seem strange to look for this, but the government uses this information to decide which group you should be in.

There are many free online tools that can help you with this “assessment check”.

Be careful – if you apply to the council without doing this check, your neighbours’ bills may go up without lowering yours.

But if the online tool and assessment check suggest you’re paying too much tax, call your local authority.

If you’ve paid too much, you’ll get an old bill – and so might your neighbors.

Patrick and Helen followed Martin’s advice and took the money.

They carried out investigations and appealed to the council, who decided they had overcharged.

The couple were given a £1,755 discount and their bill dropped from £245 to £200 a month.

Patrick and Helen’s neighbors also received a discount for the move, with one home receiving £7,058 and the other £2,830. They also did not have to pay council tax for a year.

Lewis added that people on low incomes, pension credits or benefits can apply for up to 100% reduction in council tax.

Families of people with severe mental impairment such as dementia or Parkinson’s and their carer receive a 50% discount.

Live-in adults can get a 25% discount, while students don’t have to pay council tax.

On last night’s show, Lewis revealed a ‘rule’ that would cut household bills by £500.

He also shared his 3-step method to cut your phone bill by £3.50.
