Mumbai: India’s Rohit Sharma has been declared positive ahead of the final match of the series against England. India captain Rohit, who led India in the four-day warm-up match against Leicestershire, tested positive for COVID 19 on Saturday.

The BCCI said that the veteran opener and all-India captain got infected with the corona virus on the third day of the warm-up match between Team India and county team Leicestershire. The BCCI, in a media release, days ahead of the fifth Test between India and hosts England, confirmed that the senior batsman’s corona test was positive in the rapid antigen test on Saturday.

According to ESPN Cricinfo, opener Agarwal has been sent to Edgbaston for the fifth Test between India and England. The fifth and last Test of the 2021 series will start from July 1. Notably, Agarwal doesn’t need to be in quarantine and the star batsman can feature in the Indian playing XI if needed. The selectors ignored Agarwal when India announced a squad full of star players for the rescheduled fifth Test against England, led by Ben Stokes.

While opener Rohit’s Covid-19 test came back positive, opener Shubman Gill has got a chance to replace his teammate KL Rahul in the series decider at Edgbaston. Rahul was ruled out of the England and South Africa series due to injury. The Indian vice-captain was injured on the eve of the first match of the T20I series between India and South Africa at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

Rohit in isolation
Rohit is currently in isolation at the team hotel and it is not yet clear who will lead India in the final of the series. Opener Agarwal is expected to leave for England on Monday and the Indian opener may join India’s squad in the evening. Agarwal played his last Test in March during Sri Lanka’s tour of India. Mayank scored 59 runs in two innings at an average of 19.66 in both the matches of the series.
