Federal Finance Minister Miftah Ismail on Monday demanded that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Finance Minister Taimur Khan Jhagra resign and PTI Senator Shaukat Tareen quit politics for trying to harm Pakistan’s interests, after the audio recording of their conversation on a major International Monetary Fund (IMF) program was leaked.

In one of the audio recordings that have been aired repeatedly on television, Tareen is heard asking Jhagra to write a letter to the federal government saying that the KP will not be able to commit to the province’s surplus in light of the recent floods. which wreaked havoc in Pakistan.

In another clip, Tareen can be heard asking Punjab Finance Minister Mohsin Leghari for the same. The provincial surplus was one of the main conditions for Pakistan’s IMF program and the lender’s loan tranche, which was agreed to by all provinces earlier this year. Ismail was referring to both the leaked audio and a letter Jagra sent him last week in which he explained that his government would not be able to generate a provincial surplus this year.

According to the federal minister, Jhagra sent the letter first to the IMF before sending it to him. “Within an hour [of receiving the letter], I checked with them (IMF) and they already had it. Are we still children? am i crazy Can’t we see you’re smart? Then you start defending.” Imran Khan should apologize to people. Both Taimur Jhagra and Shaukat Tareen should leave politics. Is politics your motivation? He rumbled.

He termed the PTI’s action as the “most shameful thing”, claiming that it exposed the true identities of the party leaders. Ismail also urged PTI followers to ask Imran Khan if Jagra’s letter was in the nation’s interest. “Support Imran but remind him that Pakistan is bigger than him. Bring him to power, but not at the expense of Pakistan.
