Nepal issues first license for 5G trials

Nepal has taken a step towards entering the 5G era by licensing 5G network trials to the country’s leading telecom operator.

Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) spokesman Santosh Padil told Chinese news agency Xinhua on Thursday that the regulator had allowed Nepal Telecom to conduct 5G trials earlier this week.

He said the company has been licensed to conduct trials on the 2600 MHz band with 60 MHz frequency bandwidth within a year and this is the first time that a telecom operator has been allowed 5G trials in Nepal.

An NTA spokesperson said that private telecom company N Cell has also sought permission to start 5G trials.

A spokesman for Nepal Telecom said that for the trials, sellers have been allowed to bring 5G network equipment from the companies but it has not been decided yet when the trials will start.
