A fire in an apartment building in New York has killed at least 19 people, including nine children.

New York Mayor Eric Adams said another 32 people had been sent to the hospital for treatment, some in critical condition.

Fire Commissioner Daniel Negro said he found people on every floor of the 19-storey building and that there was a great deal of smoke.

This is the deadliest crash in New York in 30 years, NBC said.

A previous fire at an apartment in Philadelphia killed 12 people, including eight children.


‘The most terrible fire of decades’

The fire broke out on the second and third floors of the apartment at 11 a.m. local time in the Bronx on Sunday.

Commissioner Negro said the door to the apartment where the fire broke out was open so the smoke had spread to every floor of the building.

“Members of the fire department found people on CDs on each floor who were having cardiac arrest and shortness of breath,” he said.

George King, who lives nearby, told AFP that people were waving through windows and smoke billowing from behind.

“I saw smoke and some people panicked. No one wanted to jump out of the building.”


The fire injured 63 people, at 32 hospitals

Stephen Ringley, a senior adviser to the mayor of New York, told AFP that 63 people were injured in the blaze, 32 of whom were hospitalized. The condition of 13 people is critical.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul called Sunday’s incident a nightmare and vowed to compensate those affected.

“Funding will be provided for new housing, burial costs and other needs, which is what we do in New York,” Hochul said.

The area of ​​the Bronx where the fire broke out is predominantly Muslim, and those affected are from the Gambia to the United States.
