Port Harcourt: At least 31 people have been killed in a stampede at a church in Nigeria.

At least 31 people have been killed in a stampede during a charity event at a church in the southern Nigerian city of Port Harcourt, police say.

Grace Erin Coco, a police spokeswoman for Port Harcourt, the capital of Nigeria’s Revers State, said hundreds of people who had come to the church on Saturday to get food broke down the door and stormed in, causing a stampede.

Many people had lined up since Friday to gain access to the Port Harcourt Polo Club.

A charity event is held annually at the site by a church.

A police spokesman told the Associated Press that the people had rushed to the spot and some of them were running away due to impatience. Police are on the scene and are assessing the situation while the incident is under investigation.
