The Vatican has announced plans for Pope Francis’ trip to Canada next month, including a visit to the site of a former Alberta boarding school with survivors from the institutions.
The Pope’s visit begins in Edmonton on July 24 and ends on July 29, emphasizing the participation of Indigenous people in public and private events.
The Pope is set to begin the week of attending the Erminskin Indian Residential School in Alberta with the survivors before attending a tribal church in downtown Edmonton.
The next day, a big mass is planned at the Commonwealth Stadium, the home of the Edmonton Elx CFL Football Club.
The Pope will then visit Lac Ste. Anne, the site of a great annual pilgrimage.
The Pope will then travel to Quebec City for further events and meetings, and to the city of Ecuador before returning to Rome.
Francis is expected to apologize for the role of the Roman Catholic Church in residential schools.
