Police said an investigation into animal cruelty is under way after a number of small dogs showing signs of abuse and neglect were abandoned Sunday morning in Salem, Massachusetts.

The Salem Police Department said it received several reports of puppies being abandoned at various locations around town early Sunday when temperatures were in the low 20s and 30s with winds as chilly as teens.

According to police, two dogs were recovered from the North Street/Federal Street area, and two more from the Proctor Street area. Another puppy was reportedly abandoned in that area and may still be at large.

Police said the abandoned dogs were suffering from malnutrition and dehydration. The puppies also showed signs of abuse and neglect, and police confirmed that they are investigating this as a case of animal cruelty.

Police added that the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals had been notified.

Anyone with information on the person responsible for giving away the puppies is asked to contact the investigators at 978-745-9700, the Salem Police at 978-744-1212, or the anonymous information line at 978-619-5627.

This investigation is active and ongoing.
