In the second major accident in a week on Islamabad’s Bahara Kaho Bypass project, beams of an under-construction bridge collapsed, but no injuries were reported, earlier on February 25 when shutters on the same under-construction bridge collapsed. 2 workers were killed and three were injured. The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has launched an investigation into the incident. As soon as the bridge girders fell, Chairman CDA Noorul Amin Mengal and rescue teams reached the spot. A heavy police force has also been deployed at the site and the sides of the under-construction bridge have been closed to the public and traffic. CDA spokesperson says 5 beams were installed two days ago, the last beam fell during installation. On the other hand, Chairman CDA said that the accident occurred due to the slippage of the crane, no rush is being made to complete the project. It was seen in the CCTV footage on the piers of the bridge being built. The guards collided with each other and eventually fell to the ground, one civilian escaping being hit. There was no loss of life due to the incident, police and other emergency agencies are on the spot while traffic officials are also present to maintain easy flow of traffic. Bhara Kahu along with senior officials visited the site of the accident at the construction work. Islamabad Police are reviewing the situation along with the district administration. It should be noted that on February 25, two people were killed and three injured due to the fall of the hatch on the same bridge. Police and administration officials had said that it would be difficult for them to explain the cause of the incident as it requires some technical expertise. Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif took note of the incident and sought a report from the chairman CDA. But the chairman CDA had claimed that during the preliminary investigation, it was revealed that two to three heavy trawlers were crossing the bridge early in the morning, one of which collided with the under-construction flyover.
