Toronto businessman Mohammed Al Zaibak is the latest addition to the Canadian Senate.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s office announced the appointment today, describing Al Zaibak as a team leader who brings business and philanthropic experience to the Senate.
Al Zaibak, who will represent Ontario in the Upper House, is president and CEO of Canada Development and Marketing Corporation, a holding company that invests in technology businesses.

He was previously the founder and director of Teranet Community Partnership, which developed and now manages Ontario’s electronic land registry system, and sits on a number of boards, including the Royal Ontario Museum and Toronto Metropolitan University.

Al Zaibak, a Syrian-born immigrant, is also the co-founder of Lifeline Syria, a company that helps refugees from that country come to Canada.
He is the 80th senator appointed on Trudeau’s recommendation and sits as an independent, like other senators nominated by the Liberals.
