News Daily Digital Desk: As expected, NDA candidate Jagdeep Dhankar was elected as the country’s next vice president. He defeated opposition candidate Margaret Alva by a huge margin of 346 votes. The former governor of Bengal will be sworn in as vice president on August 11.

725 deputies of the two chambers of the parliament voted today in a secret ballot. 55 deputies did not vote. 528 votes were cast for Jagdeep Dhankar. On the other hand, Margaret Alva got only 182 votes. This victory of Dhankar was expected. BJP was able to win Dhankar on its own. Together with him, he received the support of many parties.

The NDA sprung a big surprise by announcing former Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar as its candidate. Shinde’s camp of Janata Dal (United), YSRCP, BSP, AIADMK and Shiv Sena supported him. Together, he received about 70 percent of the vote. Opposition candidate Margaret Alva won 26 percent of the vote. In the previous vice-presidential election, then-opposition candidate Gopalkrishna Gandhi won 32 percent of the vote. Compared to this, the votes received by the opposition camp decreased significantly.

Meanwhile, Congress, NCP, DMK, RJD, AAP, MIM, TRS and JMM have been supported by former Rajasthan Governor Alva. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) eventually abstained from the vote. 21 members of the Lok Sabha and 16 members of the Rajya Sabha did not participate in the vice-presidential elections. However, two members of the Adhikari family voted despite the party’s ban.
