Sask., A man from Waterhen Lake First Nation, plans to rebuild the burned church at some point. Chris Martell says he will walk from his own community to Saskatoon in August to raise money to buy building materials.

Like many community members, Martell says he was upset when he heard about the milestone structure fire.

“The morning we heard about the fire, we were all devastated,” Martell said. “We want to rebuild the church immediately. (The church) has been in our family since 1952. My grandfather helped build that church.

“I was baptized there. I grew up in the church, ”he said. “We spend every Christmas mass and Easter there. (A lot) of weddings took place in that church. A lot of social events take place in that church.

A Go Fund Me page was created to assist in the restoration effort, and Mortel will be taking donations during her one-week trek to Saskatoon.

“I look forward to helping rebuild the church so we can have many more memories,” Martell said. “We want to teach young people the importance of grass roots and rebuilding and progress.”

On the early morning of June 23 he set fire to the Church of the Lady of Smiles. The cause of the fire is not yet known, but police call it “suspicious.”

“Authorities have confirmed that no one was injured,” said Saskatchewan RCMP Media Release following the fire. “The church was destroyed by fire, which was initially found to be suspicious.”
