Chief Justice of India NV Ramana on Thursday proposed the name of Justice Uday Umesh Lalith as his successor as Union Law and Justice Minister.

According to a notification by the apex court, “Chief Justice of India Justice NV Ramana today recommended the name of Justice Uday Umesh Lalith as his successor as Minister of Law and Justice. Justice Ramana personally handed over a copy of his letter of recommendation dated 03/08/2022 to Justice Lalith this (04/08/2022) morning.”

Justice Raman, who is due to retire on August 26 due to seniority, on Wednesday received a notification from the Law and Justice Minister to appoint his successor.

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court said in a notification: “Today (03/08/2022) at 09:30 PM, the Secretariat of the Chief Justice of India received a communication dated 03/08/2022 from the Minister of Law and Justice requesting the CJI to recommend the name of his successor.”

Justice UU Lalit, who is the senior-most judge in the Supreme Court, could become the next Chief Justice of India. Justice Lalit was appointed to the high court directly from the bar. He will serve as the Chief Justice of India for a short time – less than three months. Judge Lalit will retire on November 8.

According to the Memorandum of Procedure, the Justice Minister seeks the advice of the remaining CJI to appoint his successor. Normally, the recommendation is sought within a month of the retirement of the Chief Justice of India.
