Who is Pablo Gómez? The new head of the FIU

MEXICO CITY (EFE) .- The Chamber of Deputies ratified the economist Pablo Gómez as the new head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) of the federal government after the resignation of the previous head, Santiago Nieto, for his ostentatious wedding in Guatemala.

With 304 votes in favor, 95 against and 35 abstentions, the deputies endorsed the appointment proposed by the president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, to head the office in charge of combating money laundering.

After the vote, the official protested his new position.

Gómez (Mexico City, 1946), historical leader of the student movement of 1968, is a member of the ruling National Regeneration Movement (Morena) with long experience as a legislator, having been a deputy in three legislatures and a senator in one.

His appointment generated suspicions among who consider that they do not have technical experience in the prosecution of money laundering, but the president claimed that “he is a man of integrity, honest, incorruptible.”

Gómez replaces Santiago Nieto, who resigned on November 8 after marrying Electoral Councilor Carla Humphrey in Antigua Guatemala at a wedding with 300 guests, some of whom arrived on a private plane where $ 35,000 in cash from a businessman was found.

After the link The Secretary of Tourism of Mexico City Paola Félix also resigned, who had traveled to Guatemala in the private plane, in breach of the Government’s austerity rules.

López Obrador dismissed the meeting as a “scandalous affair” and affirmed that “any act of extravagance that goes against republican austerity cannot be tolerated.”

Since the end of 2018, Santiago Nieto had an outstanding performance in the process against the former director of Pemex Emilio Lozoya for the Odebrecht case and in the blocking of hundreds of bank accounts linked to the large drug trafficking cartels.
