Why is Eid-ul-Azha (Bakri Eid) celebrated and what is Qurbani?

The whole country is ready for Eid-ul-Azha (Bakrid), the festival of sacrifice. This festival of renunciation and sacrifice is very special and conveys a special message. Man should consider his life and property as the trust of his God and be ready for any sacrifice for his protection.

Eid-ul-Fitr-Ahja(Bakrid) is called Eid-ul-Juha in Arabic. Ajaha or Juha means morning time i.e. the time between sunset. The festival is celebrated approximately 70 days after the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

The Sacrifice of the Son The festival commemorates Hazrat Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son at the behest of Allah. Allah wanted to test Hazrat Ibrahim and so he asked him to sacrifice his son Ishmael.

Hazrat Ibrahim felt that his feelings could come between the time of sacrifice so he blindfolded himself.

Not a son but a goat

When he opened the bar, he saw that it was not his son but his goat on the altar of Mina Mount near Mecca and his son was standing in front of him. Since then, in honor of this test of faith, Muslims around the world have on this occasion offered animal sacrifices to show their faith in Allah.

Goat means big animal

In Arabic GoatsNo means a large animal that is bitten. Hence it is called Bakri Eid in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Eid-e-Qurbani means the spirit of sacrifice, in Arabic it means to be near the grave or very close, meaning on this occasion God becomes very close to man.

Gosht (meat) is divided into three equal portions so on this day every Muslim who has the status of buying one or more animals, buys the animal and remains a sacrifice. Its flesh is divided into three equal parts. One part is for the poor, one part is for relatives and one part is for oneself. In the same way that Eid is given to the poor on Eid, meat is distributed to the poor on Bakri Eid.
