Today’s hearing in the Supreme Court in the bail case of social activist Teesta Setalvad, who is in jail in the Gujarat riots case. Teesta was arrested for allegedly fabricating evidence to implicate innocent people in the 2002 Gujarat riots. On Teesta’s plea, a bench headed by Justice UU Lalit sent a notice to the state government asking it to respond. Teesta had earlier filed an application in the Gujarat High Court.

However, the Gujarat government opposed Teesta’s bail by filing an affidavit in the court. The affidavit stated that Teesta collected fake evidence at the behest of politicians and was paid for this work. An affidavit filed by the Gujarat government said the investigation showed that there was prima facie evidence against Teesta and she had been collecting fake documents and evidence during the Gujarat riots.

The government told the Supreme Court that Tista, along with the other accused, had committed several criminal acts and was involved in the crimes. Setalvad hatched conspiracy after conspiracy with leaders of political parties and this is confirmed by witness statements.
