Lahore: Farmers announced a sit-in before the Punjab Assembly yesterday.

Speaking to the media, Kisan Etihad Chairman Haseeb Anwar said that due to rains in South Punjab since April 18, crops grown in 6.4 lakh hectares were severely affected. He said the Punjab government was supposed to start procurement of wheat from April 22. Due to delay in procurement of wheat, farmers are forced to sell their grown wheat on the streets of the city.

Haseeb Anwar announced the meeting in front of the Punjab Assembly on Monday. He demanded that the government should ensure the purchase of wheat at the support price fixed by the government. He said that tomorrow, Monday, April 29, before the Punjab Assembly, the farmers will stage a dharna for their rights and sit till the demand is met. It should be noted that the government had 4 million tons of wheat stocks before the start of wheat harvest this year. During the tenure of the caretaker government, the private sector imported 3.4 million tonnes of wheat worth one billion dollars, which is 36% more than in the same period of the previous financial year.
