City42: As the count continues for local elections in England and Wales, a leading pollster has warned that the Conservative Tory Party is on course for possibly its worst result in 40 years.
Hundreds of thousands of voters cast their ballots on Thursday to elect councilors and mayors of their choice, with the first results to be announced on Friday.
Most local authority council seats were last contested in 2021, at the height of Boris Johnson’s ‘Covid vaccine pushback’. Electoral guru Professor Sir John Curtis warned the Tories could lose up to 500 councilors in Thursday’s election. It could be the worst performance by the Tory party in 40 years.
Tory leader Richard Holden admitted it was a “disappointing night” overall and insisted “this is the result you would expect from a mid-term government party”. Despite Richard Holden’s efforts to dismiss this worst defeat as a reality, the British media and public see it as the worst situation for the Tory party in four decades.
