Lawyers protested against the shifting of civil courts to Model Town Kutcheri and the terrorism charges against some colleagues.
LAHORE: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 8th May, 2024) A group of lawyers were arrested by the police after a clash outside the Lahore High Court on Wednesday.
The clash occurred when lawyers were trying to enter the court premises during a rally from Aiwan-e-Adl to LHC.
Lawyers protested against the shifting of civil courts to Model Town Kutcheri and the terrorism charges against some colleagues.
Tension at GPO Chowk came to a head when the police and lawyers clashed, with the lawyers erecting barriers and pelting stones at the law enforcement agencies.
In response to the riots, the police used batons, tear gas and water cannons to disperse the protesters.
Scores of lawyers were reportedly detained and Model Town SP and Anarkali SHO also sustained injuries.
In addition, police have summoned lawyers from various courts for questioning, a move that may fuel further protests across the province if their grievances are not addressed.
The SSP operations justified the use of force, saying it was in response to unprovoked stone-pelting by lawyers.
The police spokesman stressed the importance of observing the principles of the rule of law and condemned the violence. The skirmish caused traffic disruption on Mall Road and GPO Chowk, making commuting difficult.
