A woman who hit a police officer and ran away went to jail

Irshad Qureshi: Police produced an arrested woman in court in a case of hit-and-run from a police officer on the highway.

The police produced the arrested woman in the court of District Magistrate Mumtaz Hanjar, where the police asked to physically take the woman into custody.

Senior lawyer Shah Khawar appeared in court on behalf of the woman, the woman’s lawyers opposed physical custody.

A local judge sent the arrested woman to Adiala jail for 14 days in pretrial detention.

The woman was arrested yesterday by Rawalpindi Police from Islamabad. A case was registered at the Naseerabad police station for misbehaviour, foul language, beating up a police officer and taking away a car in January. After the outcry on Pakistani social media over the incident, the police searched and arrested the woman.

Written order of the magistrate

In the case of hitting and bruising a highway police officer, the local magistrate issued a written order to send the accused to custody.

The court rejected the accused’s request for 5-day physical custody.

At the hearing, the defense attorney of the accused said that the accused woman was injured during the arrest and should undergo a medical examination. At the request of the defense attorney, the court accepted the request for a medical examination of the accused. The court, in a written order, said that the accused should undergo a medical examination at the district headquarters hospital before being transferred to Adiala jail. The investigating officer should interrogate the accused in the prison in the presence of a female police officer and a prison officer. The Superintendent of Adiala Jail ensured that appropriate steps were taken regarding the investigation of the accused in the jail.

The court ordered the investigating officer to submit the investigation report to the accused in court within a specified period. If the investigating officer needs further investigation, he can proceed under section 5, 6, 7 of section 167 of the Criminal Code.
